Our 2022 was filled with wonder, magic, and the deepest of love for the creative minds of the artists that shared their work with Portland audiences this year. We kicked off an epic year of shows with Unit Souzou’s Constant State of Otherness at Portland Opera, featuring a lobby installation by Horatio Law. Then, we brought one night of our 14th Festival of New Performance. One gorgeous evening of Pacific Northwest artists that highlighted the ephemeral nature of this work with themes of grief, belonging, and exploration of self, world and beyond. We shared in a sold out run of Allie Hankins’s GHOSTING, the first in a series of performances based around the ideas of containment, naming, and boundaries.

Now, here at the end of the year, we are able to reflect on the beauty, bravery, and spectacle that these incredible artists brought to our stages throughout 2022. Do we plan to continue bringing risk-taking work to our curious and explorative audiences? You bet! Honestly, we hope to keep on doing it forever. How could we not??

Here’s a thing you should know: 77% of Risk/Reward’s budget is spent on artists and the production costs to support their work. Our nimbleness, commitment and ingenuity is continually geared toward how we can get more resources directly into the hands of those that make these transcendent moments happen, a priority we will never outgrow.

You, brilliant and intrepid audience member, have supported us in that commitment by buying tickets and donating your hard-earned cash, and for that, we’re deeply grateful. We’ll show our gratitude by staying an artist-centered, art-driven organization, and doing everything we can to make Portland and the PNW a place where artists can push the boundaries of performance and thrive. Thank you for continuing to support this work.

Here’s to more risks, more rewards, and more thrilling art in 2023 as we celebrate our 15th annual Festival of New Performance, as well as premiere ATOLE’s “CANELA,” a beautiful live music and storytelling tribute to life after and among grief.
